Description of the Basin

The upper Illinois River Basin includes parts of northeastern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, and southeastern Wisconsin. The drainage area of the UIRB is 10,949 mi² upstream of Ottawa, Illinois, on the Illinois River, and contains the following major subbasins (hydrologic units): Kankakee River, Iroquois River, Fox River, Des Plaines River, Chicago River, and Illinois River.
