A major component of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Quality Assessment program is to characterize the geographic and seasonal distributions of water-quality conditions in relation to major contaminant sources. For streams, the assessment of trace elements and organic contaminants is accomplished through a two-phase assessment of streambed sediments and tissues of aquatic organisms. For the LIRB, only fish tissue was analyzed.
