Mason Co., Hydrologic Unit 07130003, on left bank 100 ft. downstream from Highway 136 bridge on property owned by State of Illinois, Conservation Division, Havana Field Headquarters, 0.8 mile downstream from mouth of Spoon River, and at mile 119.6.

DRAINAGE AREA: 18,299 sq. mi.

GAGE: Digital water-stage recorder operated by a manometer in a 6' sutron X 6' steel shelter. Gage is equipped with a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers DCP. Reference gage is a Type-A wire-weight gage attached to the upstream side of highway 136. Check bar elev. is 64.64 ft. gage datum.

GAGE DATUM: Datum of gage is 424.4 ft. NVGD of 1929.

HISTORY: Gage installed Oct. 1878, by U.S. Army Engineers, readings Oct. 1878 to May 1881, Jan. 1896 to Dec. 1904, published in House Doc. No. 263, 59th Congress. Gage readings since 1904 in files of Army Engineers. Digital water-stage recorder, manometer and Marsh-McBirney velocity meter installed by the USGS in June 1985. Rock Island District, C. of E. installed a Sutron DCP also at this time with telemetry sensors for stage, velocity and rainfall also at this time.

CHANNEL AND CONTROL: Channel is straight for some distance above and below gage. LaGrange Lock and Dam acts as control at all stages with occasional backwater from Sangamon River. Streambed is firm with little shifting. Levees restrict flow to the main channel at all stages. Flow is smooth and sluggish.

DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS: Made by boat in vicinity of gage or from bridge. If bridge measurement is made, help is needed from local or state police as bridge is reduced to one lane of traffic. Boat measurements are recommended.

FLOODS: March 9, 1985, stage 36.84 ft. present datum, discharge 89,100 cfs.

WINTER FLOW: Ice could be a factor in extremely cold winters, barge traffic generally keeps channel open.

POINT OF ZERO FLOW: Not able to obtain.

REGULATION: Both gage heights and discharge are affected to some degree by operation of the navigation dams at LaGrange, mile 80.2 and at at Peoria, mile 157.8.

DIVERSION: None known.
