QUADRANGLE: Lincoln E. 7 1/2' series

LOCATION: Lat 40 11'30", long 89 21'40", in NE1/4 NW1/4 sec. 18, T. 20 N., R .2 W., Logan Co., Hydrologic Unit 07130009 at county highway bridge 1,000 ft. upstream from Illinois Terminal electric railroad, 3 miles north of Lincoln and 7.5 miles upstream from mouth.

ESTABLISHMENT AND HISTORY: Chain gage installed Oct. 19, 1944. Graphic water-stage recorder installed Sept. 18, 1945. Digital water-stage recorded installed Apr. 19, 1965, removed Sept . 30, 1971. Water-quality site 1978 through Oct. 1, 1992. Crest-stage gage installed Sept. 22. 1971 and discontinued Oct. 1, 1992.

DRAINAGE AREA: 306 sq. mi.

GAGE: Wire-weight gage on downstream side of bridge and 6 ft. pipe installation mounted on a 1 ft. diameter tree on left bank approximately 200 ft. downstream of bridge. Checkbar elevation 23.72 ft.

GAGE DATUM: Datum of gage is 557.08 ft. above NGVD, datum of 1929. Sea level elev. obtained by letter from L.P. Murphy, USAE, Peoria, IL, Oct. 18, 1945.

CHANNEL AND CONTROL: Mud bottom with thick growth of small willows on both banks. Left bank is high and not subject to overflow. Right bank is low with wide flood plain which will overflow frequently. This flood plain is cultivated. The channel is straight for 300 ft. above gage and curves gently to left below gage. At low and medium stages the flow is confined to one channel. At high stages water flows over the road over right approach to bridge.

DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS: Low stage measurements can be made below gage. Medium and high water measurements are made from the bridge.

FLOODS: Maximum discharge during period of record, 23,000 cfs. Dec. 3, 1982 (gage height 16.60). Flood of July 6, 1929, reached a stage of 17.4 ft., from flood marks reported by local residents (discharge not determined).

POINT OF ZERO FLOW: Not determined.

WINTER FLOW: Subject to ice effect in extreme cold weather.

REGULATION AND DIVERSION: None known.
