QUADRANGLE: Plymouth, 7.5' series

LOCATION: Lat 40 19' 45", long 90 53' 55", in SEl/4SWl/4, sec. 18, T.4 N., R.4 W., McDonough County, Hydrologic Unit 07130010, on right bank at downstream side of bridge on State Highway 61, 0.2 mile downstream from Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad bridge, 1 mile southwest of Colmar, and 1.8 miles upstream from Troublesome Creek.

ESTABLISHMENT AND HISTORY: Chain gage installed October 26, 1944. Graphic water-stage recorder installed July 13, 1945. Digital water-stage recorder installed October 21, 1964 on upstream side of old bridge. Removed when bridge was replaced on September 2 0, 1976. New gage installed on November 17, 1977 on downstream side of new bridge.


DRAINAGE AREA: 655 sq. mi.

GAGE: Digital water-stage recorder (ADR) operated by a manometer in an Armco type shelter. An Auxiliary Data Collection Platform (DCP) is also operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. Outside base gage is a Type-A wire-weight gage attached to the downstream side of the highway bridge. There is also a crest-stage gage mounted to the downstream side of the bridge.

GAGE DATUM: Datum is 491.53 ft. NGVD, of 1929.

CHANNEL: Channel at gage has been dredged. Streambed and banks are covered with loose soft mud. Channel may shift somewhat at high stages. Overflow banks are heavily wooded and subject to frequent overflow. Channel curves gently above gage and is straight for half a mile below. For medium stages and below, the flow is steady and sluggish.

CONTROL: No definite control for low water except debris piles which accumulate from time to time. For higher stages it is channel controlled, and there is a possibility of backwater from Troublesome Creek.

DISCHARGE MEASUREMENTS: Below a stage of 5.00 ft., wading measurements are possible 50 ft. above the railroad bridge. Higher stages are made from downstream side of the bridge.

FLOODS: Maximum stage during period of record, 27.03 ft. (ice jam) January 3, 1965. Maximum discharge 27000 cfs (gage-height 25.14 ft.) September 25, 1970.

POINT OF ZERO FLOW: about 1.8 ft.

WINTER FLOW: Effected by backwater from ice.

REGULATION AND DIVERSIONS: None known.
