Real-time Data for Salt Creek at Irving Park Road in Wood Dale (includes webcam image and link to inundation map) Location of the Salt Creek watershed gages |
THE NEAR REAL-TIME STREAMFLOW SIMULATION SYSTEM improves the hydrologic information available in DuPage County for issuing flood warnings, engaging in flood defense operations, and optimizing the operation of the Wood Dale-Itasca and Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Reservoirs. The project has two major components: (1) the installation and operation of a comprehensive raingage and streamgage network that provides real-time and published rainfall and streamflow data and (2) the development of a near real-time flood-simulation system. The objectives for the second component are: (1) simplify and interface the FEQ and HSPF models of the Salt Creek watershed into a near real-time flood-simulation system with greater robustness and ease of use; (2) test the modified models with field data to ensure that the models are applicable; and (3) integrate the models with the data-retrieval and analysis systems being developed for the radio-telemetry raingage network with pre- and post-processors to ensure that the models are user-friendly and produce timely and easily understood results. The flood-simulation system also may be applied with forecasted rather than collected rainfall data to allow more time for evaluating alternate flood-mitigation structure operation. The project supports the mission of the DuPage County Stormwater Management Division to reduce flood-hazard damages, and furthers the USGS mission of hazard reduction through the development of national hydrologic and hydraulic modeling applications, and investigations of rainfall, climate and watershed interactions.
