The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has prepared a bibliography concerning the Galena-Platteville deposits in Illinois and Wisconsin. Sources of the bibliographic information include the University of Wisconsin and University of Illinois Library Computer Systems, Illinet Online, the Illinois and Wisconsin District Libraries of the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Geological Survey Selected Water Resources Abstracts, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports, Federal, State, and local agencies, corporations, and consultants. Included in the bibliography are 186 references obtained for the study area that includes 15 counties in Illinois and 21 counties in Wisconsin.

The deposits that compose the Galena-Platteville bedrock unit are the source of ground water for many private well owners and contribute to some municipal-water-supply systems in Illinois and Wisconsin. The geologic composition of the unit affects the availability and movement of ground water, and the susceptibility of this unit to ground-water contamination. In the study area in Illinois and Wisconsin, volatile organic compounds and other contaminants have been detected in ground-water samples from the Galena-Platteville unit at several sites. "The large number of references concerning the Galena-Platteville bedrock unit and the continued interest in the quality of the ground water obtained from the unit indicated the need for a single source of references," said Timothy Brown, hydrologist and principal author of the report.

The report, titled "Bibliography of Selected References on the Hydrogeologic and Chemical Properties of the Galena-Platteville Bedrock Unit in Illinois and Wisconsin, 1877-1997," by Timothy A. Brown, Charles P. Dunning, and William G. Batten, is published as U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4054-A. Copies are available for inspection at the U.S. Geological Survey, 221 N. Broadway Ave., Urbana, Ill., and at large public and university libraries nationwide. Paper and microfiche copies can be purchased at cost from the U.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Information Services, Box 25286, MS 517, Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225-0046 (phone number is (303) 202-4700). Orders must include check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of the Interior--U.S. Geological Survey and must specify report number WRIR 97-4054-A.
