Heron Pond, located adjacent to the Cache River in southern Illinois, is a scenic and pristine wetland area rich in biodiversity reminiscent of swamps found in southern Louisiana. Presently, Heron Pond is in danger of being lost to the Cache River. At one location, the river is within 35 feet of the pond. A report released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Department of the Interior presents data collected by USGS in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Water Resources (IDNR/OWR). These data are being used by IDNR/OWR to design a mitigation plan to preserve Heron Pond.

The report titled, "Hydraulic, Geotechnical, Geomorphic, and Biologic Data for the Cache River/Heron Pond Area in Southern Illinois" by Robert R. Holmes, Jr. has been released as U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-467. Copies of the report are available for inspection at the U.S. Geological Survey, 221 N. Broadway, Urbana, IL 61801.
