A total of 18,756 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) of surface and ground water was withdrawn in Illinois during 1988, according to a report released by the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Department of the Interior. This is an increase from 15,013 Mgal/d withdrawn during 1986 in Illinois. Information is provided in the report about the amount of water withdrawn by public suppliers, households, commercial establishments, irrigators, livestock, industries, mines, and thermoelectric-power generators. The largest users of water during 1988 were thermoelectric-power generators (15,589 Mgal/d). The total water diverted from Lake Michigan for public supply was about 1,214 Mgal/d.

Water-use data are provided to serve the needs of governmental agencies, public-supply operators, water-resource managers, and researchers for assessing current water-use patterns and anticipating future water demands. Water-use data are collected and compiled by the Illinois State Water Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The report, titled "Estimated water withdrawals and use in Illinois, 1988," by Charles Avery, has been released as U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-309.
