APPENDIX A: DIAGNOSING COMPUTATIONAL PROBLEMS IN FEQ

SECTION TWO

Checking Warning Messages

After all the errors detected by FEQ are corrected, be sure to check the warning messages. Circumstances determine whether these warnings signal problems that need to be corrected. Small decreases in conveyance on the order of 1 or 2 percent are usually of minimal effect. However, large decreases in conveyance should be investigated and resolved. If the decrease is large enough, FEQ could encounter problems if the problem range of depths occurs in the simulation. Warnings about a discrepancy in the datum for head in a two-dimensional table between the value stored in the table and the value given in the Network Matrix Control Input should be reviewed and corrected if the discrepancy is unintentional. This was classed as a warning rather than an error to support older forms of two-dimensional tables with no head datum given as part of the table. All such warnings should be eliminated before trying to solve computational problems. Even a small difference in the datum for head in a two-dimensional table can cause computational problems, because the rating table represents the physical relation of elevation and discharge above the datum.
